LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY
루시모드 몽고메리는 캐나다의 작가로 1874년 11월 30일 꿈의 낙원으로
알려진 프린스 에드워드섬에서 태어났다.
태어난지 1년 9개월 만에 어머니를 여의고 아버지는 재혼하게 되어, 어린
루시는 외조부모에게 맡겨져 자라게 된다.
외할아버지는 에드워드섬의 북쪽 연안에 있는 캐벤디쉬마을에서 사설 우체국을
경영하고 있었다.
작품속에 나오는 아봔리우체국은 바로 외할아버지의 우체국이며, 또 아봔리라는
마을은 곧 캐벤디쉬를 모델로 삼은 것이다.
루시는 어려서부터 이야기 만드는 재질이 뛰어났고 또 자기가 만든 이야기를 친구들에게 들려주기를 좋아했다.
15세가 되던 1890년에는 샬로트타운신문에 시가 발표되었으며, 다음해인
1891년에는 또 다른 신문 (서부의 낙원)이란 견문기를 쓰기도 했다.
1893년 샬로트타운의 프린스 오브웰즈칼리지에서 배우고, 교직생활, 기자생활등을
하다가, 다시 대학에 들어가 영문학을 전공했다.
1895년 외할아버지가 세상을 떠나자, 홀로된 외할머니와 살기위해 다시
캐벤디쉬로 돌아온다
1911년 3월에 외할머니가 돌아가시고 , 그해 7월에 맥도날드목사와
결혼하기 까지 이곳에서 살았다. 아름다운 캐벤디쉬의 자연속에서 문학에의 길을 다지면서, 집안일, 교회일, 또 외할아버지에게서
물려받은 우체국장일까지도 하게 되는 참으로 바쁜 나날이었다.
이러한 가운데서 태어난 명작이 바로 <<빨강머리앤>>이다.
이 작품이 성공한 이래, 그녀는 일약 캐나다의 명사가 되었으며, 1923년에 영국 왕국예술협회의 회원에 추대되었고,
또 1927년 영국 수상이 캐나다를 방문했을 때는 특별히 초대되기도 했다.
1942년 4월 24일 터론토에서 일생을 마치고, 고향 캐벤디쉬의 동산에
묻혔다. 이곳은 1936년 이래 국립공원으로 지정되었다.
그녀의 작품은 <앤>,<에밀리>,<패트>등이
주인공이 되는 20권의 소설과 1권의 시집이 있다. 초기에는 덴마크어, 스웨덴어등으로 옮겨졌으나 지금은 전세계어로
읽히고 있다.
우리나라에는 1962년 3월에 신지식선생이 이화여고 주보<거울>지에
연재함으로써 비로소 소개되었다.

THE HILL MAPLES.

Here on a hill of the occident stand we
shoulder to shoulder,
Comrades tried and true through a
mighty swath of the years!
Spring harps glad laughter through us, and
ministrant rains of the autumn
Sing us again the songs of ancient dolor
and tears. The glory of sunrise smites on our fair,
free brows uplifted
When the silver-? day steps over
the twilight's bars;
At evening we look down into valleys
hearted with sunset,
And we whisper old lore together un-
der the smoldering stars.
Crescent moons of the summer gleam
through our swaying branches,
Knee-deep in fern we stand while the
days of the sun-time go;
And the winds of winter love us -- the keen,
gay winds of the winter,
Coming to our gray arms from over the
plains of snow.
Down in the valleys beneath us is wooing
and winning and wedding,
Down in the long, dim valleys earth chil-
dren wail and weep;
But here on these free hills we grow and
are strong and flourish.
Comrades shoulder to shoulder our watch
of the years to keep.

Anne of Green Gables Museum, Silver Bush
At Silver Bush, Park Corner, you
can expect to find the Campbell family home much as Montgomery
knew and loved it from her years of visiting there as child
and adult. You will remember that she was married there
and returned to the old home on every visit back to PEI
while she lived in Ontario. This is the house budding architect
Hilary Gordon (of the Pat books) called "perfect,"
and it is obvious from her journals that Montgomery agreed.
Inside, the Anne of Green Gables Museum has many family
treasures, including the double-doored bookcase from the
Macneill homestead (famous from the Anne books), the mantel
clock that chimed and the organ that was played at Montgomery's
wedding there in 1911, the peridot earrings and necklace
that belonged to beloved Campbell cousin Frede, the crazy
quilt Montgomery laboured over, the blue chest, and photographs,
letters, and first editions. Outside, you will find the
Lake of Shining Waters, a grove of silver birches, and an
old garden, while across the road you will see Grandfather
Montgomery's home and the blue Saint Lawrence gulf. There
is much to delight visitors and especially those who know
Montgomery's life and works well.
