The Leaskdale Period (1911.10- 1926.2)(1)
루시모드 몽고메리는 1911년 7월5일 프린스에드워드 섬에서 이완 맥도널드와
결혼 하고난 후 이 신혼부부는 온타리오에 있는 작은 마을인 리스크데일로 이사를 했다.거기서 이완은 리스크데일 센트폴
장로교회와 제파이어에 있는 교회, 이 두 교회의 겸임목사를 담당하게 되었으며,모드는 목사 사모로 보좌하면서 인기작가로서
저작도 계속하였다
모드가 이 목사관 다이닝 룸에서 쓴 작품으로는 <황금의 길(1913)><섬의
앤(1915)><앤의 꿈의 집(1917)><잉글사이드의 릴라(1920)><뉴문의
에밀리(1923)><에밀리 오르다(1925)><파란성(1926)> 등이 있다.
모드는 리스크데일에 사는 동안 1912년7월7일에 첫째아들인 체스터 카메론을
나았고, 1914년8월13일에는 두째는 태어나가 죽었으며, 1915년10월7일에는 이완 스튜어트를 낳았다.
모드에 이하면 이 목사관에 대해 이렇게 썼다. “ 상당히 예쁘게 들어
앉아 있는데,어떻게 보아도 결코 이상적이라고는 할수가 없다네.언젠가 그렇게 될지는 몰라도.내가 전에 살던 집 보다는
좀더 포근하고 좀더 편리하기는 해.시골 집들이 대개 그렇지만 그 못난 L자모양으로 흰벽돌로 지은 거지. 내가 그것에서
가장 못마땅한 건 목욕탕이나 화장실이 없다는 점이야, 최소한 집에는 그러네 있어야 된다고 그렇게 원했었는데도 그래.
그래야 되는거니 언젠가는 그렇게 되겠지. 그것은 알라 같은 거야.우리가 감수해야겠지.” (몽고메리여사 일기 권II

카나다 연방정부는 이 목사관을 중요문화재로 등재하였고, 20년이상의 억스부릿지와
리슽크데일 주민들이 청원한 끝에 1997년 2월에 이 목사관은 연방정부사적지로 등록 되었다.
Leaskdale에 있는 이 Lucy Maud Montgomery Manse
와는 별도로, 과거에 제파이어 장로교회 였던 건물은 현재 Uxbridge-Scott Museum on Quaker
Hill 로 변하여 있는데, 이곳은 주로 이지방 향토 자료와 이지역사람들의 족보들이 보관되어 있지만 그 외에도
모드여사의 초상화등 루시모드 몽고메리의 자료도 상당히 소장하고 있다. Leaskdale은 “Chocolate Castle
by the Lake” 가 있는 Simcoe Lake의 Georgina와 Uxbridge 사이에 있는 조그마한
시골 마을이다

THE HILL MAPLES.
[L. M. Montgomery in Zion's Herald.]
Here on a hill of the occident stand we
shoulder to shoulder,
Comrades tried and true through a
mighty swath of the years!
Spring harps glad laughter through us, and
ministrant rains of the autumn
Sing us again the songs of ancient dolor
and tears. The glory of sunrise smites on our fair,
free brows uplifted
When the silver-? day steps over
the twilight's bars;
At evening we look down into valleys
hearted with sunset,
And we whisper old lore together un-
der the smoldering stars.
Crescent moons of the summer gleam
through our swaying branches,
Knee-deep in fern we stand while the
days of the sun-time go;
And the winds of winter love us -- the keen,
gay winds of the winter,
Coming to our gray arms from over the
plains of snow.
Down in the valleys beneath us is wooing
and winning and wedding,
Down in the long, dim valleys earth chil-
dren wail and weep;
But here on these free hills we grow and
are strong and flourish.
Comrades shoulder to shoulder our watch
of the years to keep.

 The
Leaskdale Manse Museum
The Leaskdale Manse, lived in by
L.M. Montgomery and the Rev. Ewan Macdonald and their young
family from 1911 to 1926, was designated as a Provincial
Historic Site in 1965, and a National Historic Site in 1997.
The manse was purchased in 1993 by the Municipality of Uxbridge
Township, and restoration of it was begun in 2000, after
a Parks Canada architectural survey of the site and buildings
the previous year. The restoration project of the Leaskdale
Manse Museum Committee entails restoring the manse and grounds
to the 1911-1925 era when the Macdonalds lived there and
furnishing the house in period furniture.
